7 October 2001, Road Atlanta - The 2001
Speedvision World
Challenge GT Championship went right down to the tenth and final race of
the
season. RealTime Acura NSX pilot Peter Cunningham won the final race, but
Michael
Galati came home a steady second to clinch the GT Drivers' title for
Champion
Racing. Galati's team mate Derek Bell claimed his second podium in three
days
by finishing third, handing Audi the Speedvision World Challenge GT
Manufacturers'
Championship for 2001.
As in the first Atlanta race, both Galati and Bell got excellent starts,
with
Galati leading Cunningham into Turn One, with Bell following closely in
third.
But Cunningham knew he'd need every possible point to have any hope of
taking
the title, and he passed Galati in a daring move to lead the race as the
field
completed the first lap. The order at the front would remain just that way
till
the checkers, Cunningham leading Galati and Bell at the finish.
Galati's second was sufficient for him to claim the points lead and the GT
title
however, Cunningham finishing the year just twelve points adrift in the
hard-fought
GT Championship, in which Galati's higher average finishing results were
the
deciding factor over Cunningham's greater number of race wins.
