6 Sept 2002 (Pompano Beach, FL) --
Champion
Racing is
pleased to announce the entry of a third Audi S4 Competition for the
upcoming
SPEED World Challenge GT round at Mazda Raceway, Laguna Seca. 24 year-old
Paul
Edwards, of Santa Maria , California, will pilot the #3 Champion S4,
joining
regulars Michael Galati and Derek Bell for the event.
Throughout the 2002 season, Audi Sport North America's
Rod Bymaster has placed promising young American drivers in the 2001
Speedvision
GT championship-winning Audi S4, most recently Joel Nelson, who drove the
third
Champion entry at Mid-Ohio and Road America. Edwards, like Nelson, was
previously
supported in the Formula Palmer Audi series by Audi Sport N.A.
Edwards has competed extensively - and successfully -
in several open-wheel series in Europe, though he got his start in Karting,
becoming four-time California State Champion and two-time Western USA
Champion
between 1990 and 1995. After 45 wins and 29 seconds in 108 kart races,
Edwards
won the 1995 Elf Winfield Competition, earning a full scholorship to the
1996
Elf Formula Renault Campus Series.
In 1996/97, Edwards competed in the British Formula Ford
Championship (1win, 3 poles, 8 top five finishes and two track records)
and
the Formula Ford Festival, where he achieved two Poles and two race wins.
He
then won the Formula Opel Winterseries Championship in 1998, while running
a
limited schedule in Formula Renault.
Paul won two Championships in 1999 - the Formula Palmer
Audi Winterseries and the Europa Cup, while also competing in the EFDA
Euroseries.
All told, Edwards racked up eleven overall victories that year between the
three
series. After testing a factory Le Mans Corvette at Sebring during 2000,
Edwards
moved to the British Formula 3 series for 2001, but was unable to complete
the
'01 season due to lack of funding.
