Tuesday of race week, and the R8 team is
at Moroso Raceway doing pre-event systems checks. Johnny Herbert tries
out his new "Pirate" look... |
|
On Wednesday, several American Le
Mans Series teams put their cars on display at Homestead Air Force
Reserve Base, near Miami, where our hosts from the 93rd Fighter Wing "Makos"
posed with the ALMS speed machines (and one of their own). |
|
Col. Derek "Cowboy" Rydholm, Wing Ops
Group Commander, 482nd Fighter Wing, 93rd Fighter Squadron, gives Johnny
Herbert a "crash" course in flying the F-16 in one of the squadron's
simulators. Col. Rydholm and Major Joe "Hooter" Feheley, Wing Chief of
Safety, were fantastic hosts for the ALMS drivers and team personnel
present. |
|
...Johnny
catches on quickly, and promptly turns his "jet" nearly upside-down
(that's the earth over on the left of the screen)... |
|
Later
Johnny gets a closer look at a real F-16 cockpit...a bit more
complex than his usual Audi R8 cockpit... |
|
One of
the Mako's pilots kicks up a rooster tail of water on the wet runway
during a low-level, high-speed pass, as we all look on in amazement.
Our sincere appreciation and thanks go out to the men and women of
the Homestead Air Force Reserve Base for their professionalism and
for giving us all a day to remember. |

On to
downtown Miami, and on Thursday last minute preparations of all
kinds are well underway along the waterfront street course. First
ALMS practice is at 7:45 Friday morning... |
