Champion Racing’s Randy
Pobst and Michael Galati will line-up their Audi RS 6 Competitions
in third and eighth positions respectively on the 25-car grid for
Sunday's SPEED GT race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
A heavy rain shower an hour before qualifying drenched the circuit
but the sun re-appeared to continually dry the 4-mile track up to
the start and during the 30-minute time trial.
Pobst and Galati utilized their Audi’s all-wheel-drive grip in the
initial damp conditions, immediately going first (2:21.406) and
second (2:21.638) fastest on their opening timed laps. Randy
(2:20.691) and Michael (2:21.613) improved their times on their
second “flying laps” before pitting midway through the session.
By the time the Audis returned to action six minutes later, the
track had totally dried and their times were now good enough for
only fifth and eighth places. But Pobst further improved his time
(2:19.148) while Galati (2:20.084) also went faster in the closing
moments.
Michael Galati:
“Making our tires and brakes last
for the entire 50-minute race is going to be a big struggle. We’re
hitting 160mph and braking down to around 50mph a number of times
each lap. It’s a big, heavy car so the brakes have a lot of work to
do. I started from pole and won last year’s Speed GT race at Road
America.”
Randy Pobst:
“This was supposed to be a track
where our Audis would have an advantage over our lightweight rivals
thanks to our big V8 bi-turbo engines but it ain't turned out that
way. The race is going to be very hard for Michael and I – we’ll
just have to hang in there and see what happens.” |
