Situated on the starting grid in pole
position was Randy Pobst in the #1 Audi Certified Pre-owned RS
6. Champion Racing teammate Michael Galati was alongside in his #2
Audi Certified RS 6.
Galati had the better start in his 4.2 liter,
V8, bi-turbo engine and launched himself from 2nd to 1st position to
lead the 28
car
field into Turn 1. Unfortunately a little bit of under steering caused
Galati to veer off the track in Turn 7, which allowed Pobst to take
the lead. Pobst maintained that lead until the checkered flag.
Only 16 laps into the race, the Audi's would
encounter traffic on the tight 1.53-mile track. As the cars stayed
bunched together, Galati again went off in Turn 7 and gave up his 2nd
place lead to Michael Culver driving a Porsche 911 Cup car on the 34th
lap.
That lasted for only 2 laps as Galati managed
to get by Culver and take back his well-earned 2nd position.
The race would ultimately finish under
caution as a Dodge Viper went off the track and the safety crew
couldn't remove it in time for a finish under a green flag. The #1 and
#2 Audi RS 6's would finish in just that order, 1st and 2nd.
"The Champion guys have worked hard all
week," commented Rod Bymaster, Motorsport Manager for Audi Sport North
America. "Obviously being on the pole helped us this race. Randy and
Michael both did a great job keeping the cars up front. This finish
will also give the guys the confidence they need to go into our next
race at Mid-Ohio."
Randy
Pobst (Gainesville, GA). "We've come back from Sebring and taken 1st
and 2nd. The Certified Audi RS 6 held up real well and I'm looking
forward to a battle like this all year. Lime Rock is a slippery track,
which is perfect for the Audi quattro traction system. I'm on the come
back trail now-can't wait for Mid-Ohio."
Michael Galati (Olmstead, OH). "I had a
fantastic start today and unfortunately went off in the first lap and
gave the lead to my teammate. Lime Rock is a tough track with very
little room to maneuver. The Audi Certified Pre-owned guys did a great
job on the car and we're back up where we belong."
Louis Milone (RS 6 Team Leader). "Our Audi RS
6's deserved #1 and #2 today. Cadillac performed very well at Sebring
and we had to take back what was ours after 3 years. Cadillac is a
strong team and they were certainly coming on strong towards the
finish. I can't say that I'm disappointed the race finished under
yellow."
Today's race will be broadcast at 1:00 p.m.
(EDT), Sunday, June 6 on SPEED Channel. Round Three of the SPEED World
Challenge Series is June 25-27 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in
Lexington, OH.
