BRASELTON,
Ga. (September 23, 2004) - In what can only be described as an
"extremely disappointing day", the Audi Certified Champion RS 6 and S4
team struggled to combat the recent competition adjustments today
during the SPEED World Challenge GT series qualifying session at Road
Atlanta.
The recent restrictions imposed by the SCCA
Pro Racing organization played a major part in determining the grid
for tomorrow's 50-minute race. Peter Cunningham, piloting Randy
Pobst's RS 6 managed the best time of the trio by lapping the 2.54
mile, 12-turn track in 1:29.387, (102.296) which puts him on the grid
in the 12th position. One spot behind in 13th position is the current
points leader, Michael Galati, who posted a time of 1:29.404
(102.277). Randy Pobst, who switched over to drive last year's Audi S4
will start in 15th position, 1:30.195 (101.380).
"A lower level of performance than a street
car right now. That's what these competition adjustments have done to
our cars," stated Louis Milone, Audi RS 6 Team Leader.
The standing start for tomorrow's SCCA SPEED
World Challenge GT race at Road Atlanta, Round nine of the 2004
Championship, is scheduled for Friday, September 24, at 3:55 p.m.
(EDT). The race will be broadcast the following Sunday, September 26
on SPEED Channel at 1 p.m. (EDT).
Michael Galati (Olmstead, OH). "The cars are
handling great but when you are in the straight-aways 15 mph less
because of the adjustments, there's not much you can do. I thought I
could get in the top 10 but never could find a clean lap. There was a
lot of blocking today."
Randy Pobst (Gainesville, GA). "I had high
hopes for the S4 but it's obvious the development is two years behind.
It is however, quicker on the strait-aways and that will help me in
tomorrow's race because it is easier to catch up on the straits rather
than the corners. We're going to work together as a team as we always
do, and get all we can."
Peter Cunningham (West Bend, WI). "The Audi
RS 6 really handled well on my flying lap. I hit my marks and the Audi
handle great. We just gave it all we had and that's the best time we
could come up with today. I'm really starting to feel like one with
the car now. I can throw it around more and not worry about a thing
because it just plants itself so well. It's frustrating to me because
I would love the opportunity to drive the RS 6 at full power."
