Pompano Beach, Florida (27 February, 2002)
Things have been quiet on the Champion S4 scene for some months now, since
Michael
Galati took the Speedvision World Challenge GT Drivers Championship in a stunning
pair of races at Road Atlanta, winning Audi the GT Manufacturers title in
the
process.
The S4 crew were instrumental in taking the Champion Racing Lola to third
in
class in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, but have now returned their attention to
shaking
the dust off our pair of Audi S4 Competitions, with the goal of defending
the
SPEED GT Championship. We know the competition will be fierce this year,
and
new restrictions on the S4's ensure it will be a technical challenge as
well.
The team spent two short days testing at Sebring this week, where drivers
Derek
Bell and Michael Galati got in their first laps since Atlanta. Galati, as
might
be predicted, was enthusiastic to be back in the driver's seat after the
long
lay-off, and is anxious to begin the new SPEED GT season at Sebring in two
weeks'
time.
Again for 2002 Derek Bell's S4 will appropriately wear the SPEED Channel's
"Legends
of Motorsport" banner, and Derek will be doing his regular race
commentating
job from the driver's seat during the GT races.
The 2002 SPEED World Challenge gets underway with the Mobil1 12 Hours of
Sebring,
March 13-16. Round One of the GT Championship will take off from a
standing
start at 4:10pm on Friday, March 15th, and will be televised on the SPEED
Channel
at 9p.m., Saturday, March 30th. All race fans are encouraged to come and
see
us in the Sebring paddock, to meet the drivers and check out the GT
Champion
Audi S4's close-up in person.
